Our (somewhat lengthy) Answer:
As often than not, when a hard drive fails, some damage to the data recorded upon it is one result. Before we go further, let us point out clearly that what we're talking about here is not at all the same thing as privacy and security of data; which while of great importance, are separate issues (addressed elsewhere on this site). As long as the disks within the failed hard drive continue to spin, the danger of physical damage to all the stored
data increases. The most unequivocal description for this endangerment of your data is to describe it as permanent loss. We are talking about irreversible, unrepairable destruction of information: the data stored on the faulty hard disk drive. Your data.
When data recovery service is performed, even by the best of practitioners in the industry, your data is at grave risk of being damaged or destroyed. This is due to factors inherent in the nature of data being recorded as magnetic impressions on a phenomenally delicate magnetic medium consisting of a microscopically thin magnetic coating that has been applied as part of the manufacturing process to each surface of the disk platters found on the inside of all hard drives.
While existing in or "on" your hard drive, the data actually exist as magnetic states within the physical media coating, each bit within its own discrete, physical, microscopically miniscule location. Anything that touches or comes into physical contact with the media surface threatens to alter the magnetic properties of the coating at every contacted location. Wherever such alteration occurs, data recorded there is permanently lost from that particular physical location.

The preservation of data, i.e., the protection and safety of the computer information recorded upon the magnetic media inside your hard disk drive, is the underlying, overarching, most prevalent concern of our Recovery Engineers as they seek to retrieve the data from it.
In order to implement safe processes in data recovery for failed hard disk drives it is often necessary to disassemble the device within a cleanroom environment. The hard disk drive is not only a mechanical marvel of almost incredible precision, but also it is a device of such phenomenal complexity that only the CPU "brains" of a computer contain as high a level of technology — the hard disk drive is a product of advanced technological evolution, building again and again upon an immense hierarchy of engineering invention, innovation, and inspiration. For these reasons the art and science of data recovery involves not only consummate expertise in disk drive technology (not to mention data recovery technology), but also appropriate tooling, instrumentation and other facilities and equipment inside — you guessed it, a cleanroom environment. It is not cheap to have this kind of stuff (especially the consummate expertise)! Without exactly this sort of assemblage, the data on a failed hard drive is in a state of grave risk.
However, even being prepared to offer all these things (facilities, tooling, expertise) in the service of retrieving failed hard drive data is not enough, in the opinion of those of us here at MicroCom. What is required, additionally, is an attitude. We believe that your information just may be of inestimable value to you or to your business. Bargain-priced, all-in-one-stop shop... may not be able to provide top-drawer, world-class expertise and service.
With savvy and a reasonable background in computers and "computerese", but otherwise completely without advanced knowledge of disk drive technology, anyone (including you or your uncle) can download shareware applications and set up an enterprise in the data recovery industry. And with phenomenally good luck, you may be one of those fortunate enough to do business with such a provider and actually get your most important data successfully recovered at a much lower cost than MicroCom can offer... but when the disk drive has failed it's not the kind of luck most people encounter.
With actions, shall we say, bordering on callous disregard for the safety of the data written onto any given hard drive, the easy jobs earn revenue, while every job falling outside the realm of "quick & dirty" typically suffer the fate of increased media damage and thus, decreased recoverability of your data files. The engineers at MicroCom are often reminded of this truth because the non-recoverable rejects from
other services are regularly received by us for a second, or even third opinion. Inside our cleanroom we regularly see the damage done to a hard drive's media first hand (CHECK IT OUT); take a look at pictures. Often do we hear the lament: "I wish we had found out about you folks sooner." MicroCom has grown a long-standing reputation for saving the day by saving the data that competitors could not, but please know that such a happy ending is not typically how the story goes.
Using data recovery software on a failed hard drive is easily the most prevalent means by which disk media becomes damaged and existing data is physically destroyed. Unfortunately for many in need of data recovery services, this fact is not
understood by many data recovery ‘techies’ due to a lack of knowledge in disk drive technology (which truly has only a remote connection to computer science, and is covered in only the most limited way by computer science hardware education and technical training courses). Using software that allows them to access drive contents you have saved as files, they go forth copying, or attempting to copy the data to another drive — for as long as the continued operation of the failing drive mechanism will permit. Often the area upon which they focus their effort, likely to be the very files you've said you need the most, becomes the same area where media damage becomes worsened the most by the repeated access driven by the recovery application software. By the time the drive is completely dead, only luck can determine whether your most valuable files have been rescued. Or whether now, because of the damage to the recording area holding your critical data, it's too late and the information has been physically erradicated by the failed component in the disk drive.
In other cases of low-cost recovery services, such as those offering flat-rates, mitigating against the encroachment of expanding media damage is not something that is even affordable to observe except in the most superficial of ways. Another way to put it,
enterprises offering such data recovery service simply cannot afford to work safely with hard drives and provide the level of individual care you have every right to require. Of course, virtually all firms say they will provide a service second to none, but as is always the situation for anyone in any market: buyer beware. Please ask questions and choose wisely.

It is indeed a misfortune, sometimes unavoidable, to be in need of data recovery service, as indeed it is a misfortune to be in need of heart surgery.
